PHYTOCHEMICAL PROFILING AND COMPARATIVE ANTICANCER ACTIVITY OF MAJOR AND MINOR METABOLITES FROM Araucaria araucana GUM RESIN
The resin of Araucaria araucana has been used widely in traditional medicine; however, limited studies havecompared its major and minor phytoconstituents in relation to biological activity. In the present study, four crudefractions were obtained by successive extraction using solvents of increasing polarity, from hexane to water. Thefractions were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for metabolic profiling, andfour marker compounds were isolated, which were present in all fractions except the aqueous extract. All fractions andthe purified compounds were evaluated for their anticancer activity against human epithelial breast cancer cells(MDA-MB-231), using human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) as a reference for cytotoxicity. Biological activities were correlated with the presence of major and minor metabolites, as confirmed by laboratory chemical tests, purified compounds, and polarity-based fractions.
