Abstract

Hydroponically cultivated pennywort tubers (Centella asiatica) represent a promising healthy food source that contributes to present and future food security. This is the first time pennywort tubers of Centella asiatica have beenexplored for their composition and biological activities. The study quantified total polyphenol and flavonoidcontents using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, identified bioactive compounds through LC-MS analysis, andevaluated pharmacological potential via biological assays. The radical scavenging was examined through the DPPHand ABTS assays, while the inhibition of nitric oxide production was assessed for anti-inflammatory medication. LC-MS signals confirmed the introduction of 10 groups (18 metabolites), comprising terpenes, flavonoids, and other phytochemicals in the extract. The obtained IC50 values were 253.45 µg/mL, 205 µg/mL, and 254.4 µg/mLfor DPPH, ABTS, and NO inhibition, respectively, without inducing cytotoxicity in RAW264.7 cells. Thisphytochemical and bioactivity profile provides a platform for optimised cultivation strategies, boostingthepopularity of hydroponic crops, and supporting either nutraceutical or resilient food supply chains.
